Water damage repair is a complex process. There are many steps that need to be considered when assessing the severity of water damage and the repair options available to you. Unwanted water can enter the built environment through a variety of means. It does not take a large volume of water to cause expensive damage. Uncontrolled moisture inside a building can lead to possible microbial amplifications and potential health issues for residents if not quickly extracted. To mitigate water damage, the affected areas must be dried using a combination of water removal, extraction and dehumidification.

Categories of Water
The following categories refer to the range of contamination found in water.
- White Water – White water damage does not pose a substantial health concern. The most common instances of white water damage are caused by overflowing sinks, leaking appliances, or burst pipes. This is also the easiest category of water to fix, but should still be done in a timely manner as all water damage is serious, and can cause significant damage if ignored.
- Grey Water – Grey water comes from a source that may cause sickness when exposed to or consumed. This may be water from a toilet bowl, or other sources that have been exposed to relatively mild chemicals or toxins. Grey water should be treated with caution, and needs to be handled quickly and safely by a professional.
- Black Water – The third and most serious type of water source is black water. While not necessarily black in color, black water is completely unsanitary. Generally water from any type of flooding, be it river/rain water or seawater, is classified as black water and contains harmful bacteria.
Aside from the categories of water, there are also four different classes (aptly named classes I, II, III, and IV) given to the damage, which is based upon the rate of evaporation of the water from the damaged area.
Commercial Water Damage
Categories of Water DamagePrimary Water Damage
Typically occurs in structures and contents as a result of direct, unintentional contact with water. Primary water damage may be a result of flooding, leaking pipes, spills, toilet overflow, running facets, roof leaks, swelling ground water through basement or crawlspace, and more.Secondary Water Damage
Primary Water Damage can also cause secondary water damage, which is potentially as damaging to structures and contents. Secondary water damage occurs indirectly through condensation. Condensation is the process of changing a vapor into a liquid by the extraction of heat. Condensation is generally considered the opposite of evaporation. Evaporation is essential to the water damage restoration process.
Water Damage Restoration Process
Water damage restoration is a multi-step process. It involves eliminating the standing water, evaporating the remaining moisture and restoring your home to its former condition. Depending on the amount of damage, this may involve repairing or replacing walls or flooring, removing mold colonies and disposing of severely damaged or contaminated articles.
Water damage is not only a nuisance; it can be extremely dangerous. Standing water presents a breeding ground for bacteria and fungi, even black mold. If left untreated, your wet floor can severely hinder your indoor air quality and spread a variety of different contaminants. Also, the damage to your personal property increases the longer you allow the water to persist.
When our water damage restoration effort is complete, your home, office or business will show no signs that any water damage had ever occurred. We take the time to meticulously remove every trace of moisture and every sign of damage, so that you can move on with your life without having to be constantly reminded of the past. Our highly trained and experienced IICRC Certified Technicians remove water in carpeting, hardwood floors, drywall, ceilings — anywhere! Vital Restoration's emergency response to mitigate the risks of water damage can be done fairly quickly and efficiently, as not to interrupt your everyday life.Dehumidification

Using state of the art equipment, we maintain conditions to eliminate water vapor suspended in the air, by monitoring the temperature and relative humidity as water evaporates.Additional Resources
